The group was formally established on 1 October 2004 when Cruiser Destroyer Group 5 was redesignated under the modern carrier strike group framework. Headquartered at Naval Base San Diego and assigned to U.S. Third Fleet, CSG-11 provides forward-deployed sea-based power projection including air superiority, strike warfare, and maritime security missions across the Pacific and beyond. The group's core elements include Carrier Air Wing 17, Destroyer Squadron 9, and Aegis-equipped surface combatants that together field F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, EA-18G Growlers, E-2D Hawkeyes, and MH-60R/S Seahawk helicopters. Between 2006 and 2013 alone, the group completed four deployments to the Fifth Fleet area in the Persian Gulf and North Arabian Sea, plus a surge deployment with the Seventh Fleet in the western Pacific. One 252-day deployment saw CVW aircraft log over 29,440 flight hours and 9,344 launches in support of combat operations in Afghanistan, a record that reflects the sustained operational tempo this strike group has maintained across multiple theaters.

Perfect For: U.S. Navy veterans, USS Nimitz crew members and alumni, Carrier Air Wing 17 and DESRON 9 sailors, Pacific Fleet enthusiasts, naval aviation collectors, deployment keepsakes, cruise book displays, shadow boxes, challenge coin and patch boards, and anyone building a serious Navy unit-history collection around carrier strike group heritage and Indo-Pacific power projection.
